Nipping, biting and chewing are all too common in puppies up to one year of age; much of it is because of the intense need to alleviate the discomfort brought on by teething. Though this is understandable, you need to work towards establishing boundaries on what is within acceptable limits and what is not. What’s even more important is the need to do this from the first day that you bring your pup home.

Most Rott owners make the mistake of thinking their tiny little tyke is oh-so-cute when he growls and nips at their ankles. But before they know it, the little tyke has grown into a towering 26”, 120 lbs powerhouse of a dog that cannot now be controlled. A little nip from a full-grown Rottweiler could very well send you into the hospital for stitches.

Why Rottweiler Puppies Continue Biting

Because of your instinctive reaction brought on by its nipping and biting, your Rottweiler puppy soon sees the biting as part of a game and is likely to take a nip every time he wants your attention or to get you to play with him. No matter how amusing this may seem when your pup is little, you need to resist the urge to give in.

Instead of indulging him in a game of ‘nip-n-bite’ it is imperative that you make every effort to discourage him from doing so. If you give in even once, your smart little rottie will take you for a push-over and is likely to make a more persistent effort to get your attention the next time he is in the mood for it.

Remember these two golden rules when dealing with your Rottweiler puppy:

1- Deal with the biting immediately; do not wait for the next time.

2- Deal with the biting every single time it happens, even if you know it was an accident. Your Rottweiler needs to know that you mean business and that biting is something that you will just not accept.
