Irrespective of breed, dog ownership is something that you should think about carefully before you bring any dog home; more so if the dog you are planning on bringing home is a Rottweiler.

Essentially pack animals, dogs inherently believe in a social hierarchy in which the Alpha dog is the pack leader. Though typically non-bullying and even affectionate and benevolent towards his subordinates, there is never any doubt in anybody’s mind as who the boss is and who has the ultimate say.

Do What I Say; Not What I Do

Alpha dogs make and live by their own rules and will enforce them with other members of the pack by means of a cold, hard-eyed stare and a dominant physical stance. If challenged further he could resort to snapping and bite.

Large and powerful, a Rottweiler is the archetypical Alpha dog. Although individual temperaments and personalities do differ, Rottweilers as a breed tend to have a socially dominant personality. Unless you can prove otherwise, your Rottweiler will automatically assume the leadership in your home, a dangerous situation for you and your family.

Shall We Dance? I Lead; You Follow

Leadership, guidance and training are important elements of Rottweiler ownership. Do not get taken in by the cute friendly little Rottweiler pup that you’ve just brought home from the breeder. Left to his own devices, the little tyke will soon grow up into a hard-staring, menacing adult who you will not be able to control. Start training your pet when he is a pup. While you do not have to be unnecessary harsh with your pup to show him who’s boss; it is essentially that you assert yourself and establish your alpha role as early as possible. Never make the mistake of treating your Rottweiler pup as an equal.

If you have any doubts about your capability of assuming leadership calmly and confidently, then it may be best to either select the most submissive runt of the litter or choose another breed altogether. While harsh discipline will make your Rottweiler more aggressive than normal, in the absence of any assertive discipline, your Rottweiler will automatically assume leadership and become the boss of your household; a situation you definitely want to avoid.

Once the roles are firmly established, you will have a pet that is exceptionally loveable and steadfastly obedient and loyal.
