Once you have made the decision to enter your Rottweiler in any dog show, there is a list of things that will need to be done to prepare both of you before the big day. The world of dog shows is like no other, and there is no leeway given to those who arrive unprepared.

Registration is the first step in the process. Most Rottweilers competing in the United States are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Before your dog can register with the AKC, both of its parents must first be registered, as must the litter as a group.

1. Register

Don’t fall into the common misconception that the breeder will register your Rottweiler pup. The breeder is only responsible for registering the litter; it is your responsibility alone to register your own dog. It is a good idea to maintain a good relationship with your breeder though, as their help may be necessary to complete some of the information on the registration forms.

2. Train

Once your Rottweiler is registered you need to focus on socialization and obedience training, both of which are of the utmost importance in the world of the dog show. While the dog is being judged it will be poked and prodded by a variety of judges, and it will encounter a large number of other dogs and people. A Rottweiler that cowers or shows any sign of aggression whatsoever to a judge during the judging process will immediately be disqualified per AKC Breed Standard rules.

3. Handling 101

Many people go through the process of getting their Rottweilers ready to show only to realize that while the dog is ready, they are not. If you have never handled a dog in the show ring, you are left with two options: learn to become a handler or find the right handler.

Handling classes are offered all over the country, most often by breed clubs. Check with the nearest Rottweiler Club to you and inquire about the existence of such classes. If they are not available, the club will be able to put you in touch with someone who can help.

If you don’t think you have what it takes to be in the spotlight with your Rottweiler, the local Rottweiler Club will probably have a list of good handlers for hire. The American Kennel Club also offers a program for registering handlers.

4. Find a Beautician

Okay, so they are really called dog groomers, but remember that the next time you go to the people groomer to get a perm. Appearance is crucial for show dogs, and even though Rottweilers are not a long hair breed, they will need to be bathed and brushed, nails trimmed and teeth brushed before you even think about taking them to a show.

When looking for a groomer, ask about their experience with larger breeds like the Rottweiler. Some groomers are neither equipped nor prepared to deal with your Rottweiler and when you’re considering a dog show you need someone who can do what needs to be done!
