Large and powerful, the Rottweiler breed is sweeping the popularity polls. It is the current fad dog of the moment and has been the second most popular AKC registered breed for four years running. If you considering jumping into fray and getting yourself a Rottweiler too there are a few things you need to think about.
Owning a Rottweiler can do much to enhance your macho image but that should not be your sole consideration for wanting to own a Rottweiler. Getting swept up by the hype of
Rottweiler ownership could be a terrible mistake for you as well as your dog. Owning a Rottweiler is radically different from owning any other breed of dog; underestimating the breeds strength and requirements could very well be disastrous for both.
What Rottweilers Need
Space & Exercise – Originally a working breed, the Rottweiler needs plenty of exercise everyday and plenty of space to romp around in; ideally a large yard with a high enough fence. Confining your Rott to a tiny spare room or leaving him chained up all day will result in a dog that is bored, unruly and destructive.
Personal Commitment – Personal commitment is the mainstay of Rottweiler ownership. Its inherent dominant personality combined with its immense size and strength, can make the Rottweiler a breed to reckon with. In order to stay in control and maintain the “I’m-the-owner-you-are-the-dog” status, your Rottweiler will need extensive socialization and obedience training from an early age. Failure to do so could result in a role reversal; not a very pleasant situation for you and your family.
Do you have what a Rottweiler needs?
If you have space and time constraints then the Rottweiler is definitely not the dog for you. The innate aggressive nature of the Rottweiler can and will manifest itself manifold in the absence of adequate space and proper obedience training and socialization. You should consider keeping a Rottweiler only if you are sure that you have what it takes to care for one.
